Amish Cooking Recipes

Amish cooking reflects their rich German heritage, the simple way they live and the fresh ingredients they have available from their farms. Amish foods tend to be heavier than we are used to and reflect their hard working outdoor life.

Amish cooking recipes include traditional and contemporary recipes adapted from the kitchens and pantries of old order amish cooks and their food tradition in the new world.

Amish cooking recipes are a broad scenario with one-pot and mainstay dishes, soups and stews, meats, vegetables, salads and greens, pickles and relishes, sweets and sours. There are also amish cooking recipes for breads, pies, cakes and cookies, puddings, dumplings and desserts as well as fruit butters and jams and jellies. Cheese, beverages and candies round out the amish cooking recipes offerings.

The Amish and Mennonites first settled in Pennsylvania in the 1600s. A distinctive mark of the Amish is their black horse drawn buggies.

Amish cooking has become ingrained into traditional American cooking. Chances are, growing up your grandmother or your mother prepared a dish or two that was based on a traditional Amish cooking recipe and you didn't even know it.

You just knew that you found it delicious. In my case it was the "Amish Friendship Bread" that my grandmother made when I was a young child. It was awesome!

Later in life, I tried to find Amish Friendship Bread, and found that no one knew what I was talking about.

Most Amish do not have electricity in their homes. For cooking, many use either wood or kerosene oil stoves; they cool their food in ice boxes, spring houses, or their basements. A minority have freezers.

The Amish prepare most of their food from scratch, but some also use mixes and instant foods. The Amish preserve all of their own fruits and vegetables and much of their meat by canning. A special amish cooking recipe is the Homemade bologna which is popular and is usually made without the casing.

Some Amish will occasionally purchase frozen foods as a change of taste or as a treat. Many rural Amish families have their own milk cow and make cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, and ice cream. Those near urban areas usually buy these items at the supermarket or cheese houses.

Many farm families eat cornmeal mush - made from oven-roasted field corn - for breakfast. Eggs and cooked cereal are other typical breakfast foods. Obviously these are great amish cooking recipes.

Fruits or juice may be included in most amish cooking recipes. The main meal of the day typically consists of noodles, macaroni, or potatoes; meat, which is often fried; and canned vegetables. Homemade or supermarket-bought bread is served at every meal.

The lighter meal commonly consists of soup, cheese or bologna, and fruit. Snacks are usually apples, cookies, or leftovers.

Many years ago I asked my mother if she had the recipe and as luck would have it, my grandmother never wrote down any of her amish cooking recipes.

She had them all stored in her head. So from there the hunt was on. I finally traced the roots of my favorite dessert to the amish cooking recipes kingdom..

I found that many of the great breads, cookies and dishes that my grandmother used to make, were actually amish cooking recipes! Here is the Amish Friendship Bread recipe: 1 c. starter, 2/3 c. oil, 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder, 1/4 tsp. baking soda, 3 eggs, 1 c. sugar, 2 c. flour, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, Dash of nutmeg, Raisins, nuts, dried fruit & grated carrots (opt.), Combine ingredients. Pour batter into 2 greased loaf pans, 8 x 3 x 2 inches each. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until dry. Only imagine. Try it.
