Amish Cooking Recipes

Most Amish cooking recipes reflects their German heritage, the ingredients they have from their farms and the way they live and most of these amish cooking recipes are heavier than we are used to and reflect their laborious working life.

Amish cooking recipes include contemporary and traditional recipes adapted from the old amish cooks and their tradition in America.

Amish cooking recipes are a broad scenario with mainstry dishes and one-pot , stews and soups, vegetables, meats, greens and salads, relishes and pickles, sours and sweets. There are also amish cooking recipes for pies, breads, cookies and cakes, dumplings, desserts and puddings as well as jam, jellies and fruit butters. Candies, beverages and cheese round out the amish cooking recipes offerings.

The Amish and Mennonites first settled in Pennsylvania in the 1600s. A distinctive mark of the Amish is their black horse drawn buggies.

Amish cooking has become ingrained into traditional American cooking. Chances are, growing up your grandmother or your mother prepared a dish or two that was based on a traditional Amish cooking recipe and you didn't even know it.

You just knew that you found it delicious. In my case it was the "Amish Friendship Bread" that my grandmother made when I was a young child. It was awesome!

Later in life, I tried to find Amish Friendship Bread, and found that no one knew what I was talking about.

Most Amish people do not have electricity in their houses. They use either wood or kerosene oil stoves for cooking and cool their meals in ice boxes. A few have freezers.

Amish people prepare most of their cooking recipes from zero, but some also use mixes and instant foods. Amish also preserve all of their fruits, vegetables and eat by canning. An special amish cooking recipe is the Homemade bologna which is vwery popular and is usually made without the casing.

Some Amish purchase frozen foods as a change of taste. And many others Amish families have their own milk cow and with the milk make cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, and ice cream. The Amish who live near urban areas usually buy at the supermarket..

Many farm amish families eat, for breakfast, cornmeal mush, roasted field corn. Also eggs and cooked cereal are other typical foods, that are changed into great amish cooking recipes.

Fruits and juice are included in most amish cooking recipes. The main meal of the day are potatoes, fried meat, macaroni, noodles and canned vegetables. Homemade bread is served at every meal.

The lighter meal consists of cheese or bologna, soup, and fruit. Snacks are always apples, leftovers or cookies.

Many years ago I asked my mother if she had the recipe and as luck would have it, my grandmother never wrote down any of her amish cooking recipes.

She had them all stored in her head. So from there the hunt was on. I finally traced the roots of my favorite dessert to the amish cooking recipes kingdom..

I found that many of the great breads, cookies and dishes that my grandmother used to make, were actually amish cooking recipes! Here is the Amish Friendship Bread recipe: 2/3 c. oil, 1 c. starter, 1/4 tsp. baking soda, 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder, 1 c. sugar, 3 eggs, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, 2 c. flour, Raisins nuts, Dash of nutmeg, Combine: Pour batter into two greased loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Only imagine. Try it.
